Junot Díaz depressing novel, The Brief Wondrous
Life of Oscar Wao reveals the light upon Oscar’s work as a whole after his demise.Oscar
has struggled throughout his life to find love. But as he thought he couldn't find
the one, along came Ybon who he was falling for her, “He stopped writing and
began to go over to her house nearly everyday,” (Diaz, 286). At that moment, it
was a sign of hope. Hope for Oscar to become closer to her and will become more
than friends. He knew she would have a boyfriend and that was the biggest
obstacle he had experienced, “Broken nose, shattered zygomatic arch..,” (Diaz,
301). One mistake of being with Ybon is almost getting himself killed. The
hardship of being in love shows the strengths and weakness of what he goes
through. He knew he couldn't give up that easily. He wanted to save his and Ybon’s
life from her boyfriend, even if it cost him his own life, “He told them about
Ybon and the way he loved her…Fire, he blurted out, unable to help himself,” (Diaz,
321-322). Till the end of his death, he never regretted being in love with
Ybon. He wanted to find love and someone to return that favor and he did. His
work as a whole was to be with Ybon and showed how much he cared for her. His
death proved that he wasn't going to give up hope for their love.
